The Mission of the Institute is to provide an independent forum for those who dare to read, think, speak, and write in order to advance the professional, literary, and scientific understanding of sea power and other issues critical to national defense.

Norm Hatch had a backstage pass to military bravery beginning as a combat cameraman in World War II. He is a decorated and well-known retired Marine dedicated to the field of news photography with over 64 years of experience in Hollywood and Washington. His photographs and films won numerous honors, including an Academy Award for the short documentary "With the Marines at Tarawa." His assignments in the military and federal government career that followed included public information specialist, motion picture cameraman, film & TV producer, consultant to the White House Press Office during four administrations and to the House and Senate Photo and Television Galleries. He is featured in the Naval Institute's Americans at War documentary project.
