The Mission of the Institute is to provide an independent forum for those who dare to read, think, speak, and write in order to advance the professional, literary, and scientific understanding of sea power and other issues critical to national defense.
Dr. Norton, a native of Gloucester, Massachusetts, is a professor emeritus of the University of Connecticut Health Center in Farmington. He has written extensively on maritime subjects and is the author of Joshua Barney: Hero of the Revolutionary War and 1812 (Naval Institute Press, 2001). He is the recipient of the 2002 Gerald E. Morris Prize for maritime historiography.
