The Mission of the Institute is to provide an independent forum for those who dare to read, think, speak, and write in order to advance the professional, literary, and scientific understanding of sea power and other issues critical to national defense.
The most recent of Mr. Holzer's 22 books on the Civil War era is Lincoln at Cooper Union: The Speech that Made Abraham Lincoln President (New York: Simon & Schuster, 2004). The vice president for communications and marketing at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City, he is co-chairman of the Abraham Lincoln Bicentennial Commission. A frequent commentator concerning Civil War subjects on PBS and the Arts & Entertainment network, Mr. Holzer is the founding vice chairman of The Lincoln Forum and serves on the board of directors of the Ulysses S. Grant Association.
