U.S. Naval Institute Wins Coveted Silver Telly Award

Americans at War documentary recognized for excellence

July 22, 2008 Americans at War, a powerful documentary produced by the United States Naval Institute is the recipient of the 2008 "Silver Telly" award.

"USNI is proud to receive this prestigious award," said retired Marine Corps Major General Tom Wilkerson, the CEO of USNI. "Shot in high-definition video, the project captures the inspiring and haunting vignettes of Americans at war, from the well-known such as George H.W. Bush, Bob Dole, Jim Webb and Dan Inouye, to those known only to family and friends."

The Telly Awards, established in 1978, "honor the very best local, regional, and cable television commercials and programs, as well as the finest video and film productions, and work created for the Web," according to the organizers.

Americans at War is a video testament that war is the court of last resort, devoid of glamour and glory, but filled with courage of everyday Americans and their extraordinary achievements.

Judges this year had to choose from more than 14,000 entries this year from all 50 states and many foreign countries. USNI is the only military association singled out for a Silver Telly, the highest award given.

The popular series illuminates actual combat experience from the personal perspective of men and women who fought in America's wars from WWI to Vietnam. It has been airing nationally on public television stations since June 2007.

In 2007, Americans at War also received the Ava Platinum Award and Peer Award.
