Veteran Navy Captain derides liberty policies as dysfunctional and counterproductive in Proceedings article
May 9, 2008 – In a scathing indictment of overseas liberty policies, a seasoned Navy captain says a pernicious risk-aversion mentality has caused many officers to treat their Sailors like children who cannot be trusted.

April 15, 2008—U.S. forces turned the tables on al Qaeda in Iraq's al Anbar province by capitalizing on the terrorist organization's fundamental misunderstanding of Iraqi religious, tribal, and social customs.
That's the judgment of retired Marine Colonel Mark Cancian, who writes in the April issue of the U.S. Naval Institute's flagship magazine Proceedings that al Qaeda in Iraq greatly overplayed its hand in al Anbar by imposing a harsh religious code, undermining the tribal system, and instituting horrific criminal punishments—beheadings, amputations, beatings. April 7, 2008—In a soon to be published book chronicling the role of Navy SEALS in the bloody Battle of Ramadi, former SEAL Dick Couch tells the heroic tale of Petty Officer 2nd Class Michael A. Monsoor, who on Tuesday April 8th is to receive the Medal of Honor posthumously in a ceremony the East Room of the White House.
The commander of a SEAL platoon in Vietnam and author of numerous books, Couch recounts the story of Petty Officer Monsoor and his comrades in The Sheriff of Ramadi: Navy SEALs and the Winning of al-Anbar, to be published this fall by the Naval Institute Press, the book publishing arm of the U.S. Naval Institute. Naval Institute Launches 'Raw, Unvarnished' Website for Enlisted Service Members and Junior Officers

February 28, 2008 - We at the U.S. Naval Institute lost one of our own last week when Captain Stephen F. Davis, a valued member of our Editorial Board, died in Washington of complications from throat surgery. Captain Davis established his credentials from the moment he joined the Board last fall, shortly after relinquishing command of the guided missile cruiser USS Vella Gulf (CG-72). More

A Hero's Long-Delayed Medal Bestowed at Naval Academy Ceremony
